Project Managment

Being a proficient project manager entails having strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with others.

In most projects, it is common to work with cross-functional teams that include individuals from outside your organization. Managing a team comprising of talented individuals who do not directly report to you is a challenging task. It demands substantial experience and is considered one of the most crucial skills for a project manager to master.

With six years of experience as a project manager, I have gained invaluable expertise in this field. Prior to my role as a project manager, I actively participated as a team member in numerous projects.

Methodologies

I'm not going to describe each method here as this is done on many other websites.

I'm not also going to answer question about which methodology is better as in my opinion, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to managing projects.

A good project manager should be proficient in both methodologies, know when to use the right tool and to switch between them as and when required.

Predictive / Waterfall

This is a methodology which I used the most at my current work place. Predictive approach can be applied to project of any type and  size, but in my opinion suits the best a large, long term projects, especially during the initial planning / scoping phase.

One notable project I structured using this methodology was a three-year research and development (R&D) project with a ten-year rollout plan. This project received nearly £1 million in government funding for research and development, in addition to £2.5 million from the company budget.

Participating in the bid preparation for this project was an incredibly valuable experience. It provided me with the opportunity to gain comprehensive knowledge about the entire process and collaborate with various institutions.

Adaptive / Agile

I have successfully delivered several short to medium-length projects utilizing the Agile methodology.

Agile methodology is particularly effective for research and development (R&D) and integration projects, where the desired outcome is uncertain or there is a risk of scope creep.

Additionally, I prefer using Agile methodology for IT/software development related projects.

Currently, I am employing this methodology for the development of a production asset monitoring application, which I am also showcasing on my page.
